Florida Chapter Newsletter
 Dear CBDNA Colleagues,

I hope the year has started well for you.  This note is to update you on the most recent news for the Florida Chapter of CBDNA; I apologize for the length. First of all, Bob Reynolds has agreed to serve as conductor for the 2010 Florida Intercollegiate Band in Tampa.  This is his first engagement with that ensemble, and I know we all look forward to hosting Bob and presenting our students the opportunity to work with him.

As many of you already know, the FBA Clinics Committee has decided to discontinue the Reading Band sessions at FMEA this year.  The reasoning behind this decision is quoted below:

The Clinics Committee has decided to end the performing of the New FBA Concert Music, grades 1-3 & 4-6.  Attendance is not always high, and in many cases, the new music can be found on CD recordings.  No group could ever give the grade 5&6 literature justice in such a way that the band directors would benefit, unless you could really spend some time on it.

As I understand it, the Reading Band will only be reinstated in future years if a substantial response is heard from the FBA membership.  Clearly this decision has substantial ramifications for us, including the operation and audition process of the FIB to the prospect of additional clinic sessions sponsored by CBDNA at future conferences.  Interestingly, the proposed FBA clinics schedule now includes the entry "Sight Reading Session ?" in the time slots formerly reserved for the CBDNA Reading Band.

The CBDNA-sponsored panel discussion session has been scheduled for Friday, January 9th at 4:00 pm.  This panel will include me, John Carmichael, Rich Glaze and Artie Clifton.  We are still generating a list of topics for this session, including collaborations between secondary school and university band programs, commissioning and performing new music and audition expectations for the university music program.  If you have any ideas to add to this list, please let me know and we will include them as possible.  The Florida Atlantic University Wind Ensemble performs Friday evening at 8:30 in the Convention Center.

Finally, Jeff Traster has graciously agreed to host our annual meeting in the University of Tampa band rehearsal room on Saturday, January 10th at 10:00 am. I suspect we should be adjourned by noon.  A reminder that a motion passed at the 2006 meeting requires representation from each college or university at this meeting in order for students from each university to be considered for the FIB in the following year.

Best regards,

Kyle
