Teaching, Conducting and Performing with Informed Inspiration

Our featured guest artist for the conference is our esteemed colleague recently retired from the University of Colorado, Allan McMurray. He will be joining us for a number of sessions to inspire all of us, and Im SURE you will not want to miss them!

Also, I am pleased to announce the university and secondary school performing ensembles and their directors who will present an exciting series of concerts over the three days (thanks to president-elect Cody Birdwell, University of Kentucky for riding herd over the university selection process):

Auburn University Wind Symphony, Rick Good

Florida State University Symphonic Band, Patrick Dunnigan

Furman University Wind Ensemble, Les Hicken

Georgia Southern University Symphonic Wind Ensemble, Robert Dunham

University of Alabama Symphonic Band, Randall Coleman

University of Memphis Wind Ensemble, Albert Nguyen

The conference hotel (for CBDNA/NBA members) is conveniently located near eating establishments and will be attached via shuttle to the UNF facilities as well as Town Center, which has even more dining options. http://hamptoninn.hilton.com/en/hp/groups/personalized/J/JAXBYHX-CBD-20140227/index.jhtml?WT.mc_id=POG

Conference activities will begin after lunch on Thursday, Feb. 27 and conclude with evening performances on Saturday, March 1.

This e-mail also serves as a CALL FOR PRESENTATION TOPICS for the 2014 CBDNA Southern Division conference.

The range of possible topics is vast. A short list of general categories would include literature, conducting technique, conducting pedagogy, composer information, recent commissions, innovative teaching techniques, rehearsal management, historical contributions, chamber winds, curriculum, technology, band office operations and management, athletic band topics, and many, many more. Sessions that fit the theme of our 2014 conference: Teaching, Conducting and Performing with Informed Inspiration are especially encouraged.

The session could be presented by you (alone or with others), or you may suggest a session that you have seen elsewhere that would be a terrific addition to our Southern Division conference. If you have ideas and suggestions that you would like to bring to my attention, please send a reply to this e-mail with a brief summary (one or two paragraphs) of the idea you have in mind.

The deadline for submission is August 12, 2014.

If I find your idea to be of interest, I will contact you for additional discussion.

Unlike the process for determining performance groups, there is no formal "juried" process for determining selected presentations. These "presentation topics" will be selected based on providing our membership with the best possible conference.

I will try to have sessions solidified by late September.

If you are asked to present a session at the conference, you are solely and completely responsible for your own travel arrangements and accommodations in Jacksonville as CBDNA-SD provides no monetary assistance of any type.

PLEASE NOTE: THIS IS NOT A CALL FOR FORMAL RESEARCH PRESENTATIONS. That call will be forthcoming.

This call is intended for session presentations of a more general nature.

If you have questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Thank you, and I look forward to seeing you in Jacksonville February 27 if not sooner!

Call for Recordings
Dear CBDNA Southern Division Colleagues:

I look forward to serving the Southern Division over the next two years as President, and thank you for the trust you have placed in me. It is humbling. It was good to see many of you in Greensboro, NC, where John Locke and Kevin Geraldi ran a wonderful national conference. Thank you both!

I also wish to thank Rick Clary for his service over the last 2 years as our division President, and congratulate him on his election as national vice president.

As previously announced, the 2014 CBDNA Southern Division Conference will be held at the University of North Florida in Jacksonville, February 27-March 1. Gordon Brock and his staff are eagerly preparing for the event.

This email will serve as a "Call for Performance Applications" for the conference.

To apply for a performance slot, please assemble a CD recording as follows:

1) Include 25-35 minutes of live concert recordings;

2) Recordings may be from academic year 2011/12 or 2012/13.

3) Do not edit the recordings in any fashion (i.e., performance edits, etc.). Do not digitally alter the recording in any fashion (i.e., EQ; digital plug-ins; normalization; reverberation; compression; etc.).

4) Include TWO copies of the CD; ONE clearly marked with the school, ensemble, and conductor, and ONE entirely unmarked. (Be sure to finalize the CDs so they will play in a stand-alone CD player.)

Send the two CDs and a brief cover letter with programming ideas to:

Dr. Cody Birdwell
33 Fine Arts Building
University of Kentucky
Lexington, KY 40506

Some notes for clarification...

Evaluations of the recordings will be conducted by a team of qualified professionals under the direction of Cody Birdwell (Southern Division President-Elect).

The ensemble and conductor making application must be the ensemble and conductor represented in the recordings and be a current member of CBDNA.

A "live concert recording" is one captured from a performance with an audience in attendance. Recordings made in "one take" for a future commercial release are not considered live concert recordings even if unedited. Likewise, a dress rehearsal is not considered a live concert.

Technology has advanced to the point whereby many of us have some type of sophisticated sound editing software. Many wonderful things are possible with this software, but please do not edit or alter the recordings in any manner.

By submitting an application for consideration, you acknowledge that you intend to accept an invitation to perform in Jacksonville, FL should an invitation be extended to your school. This implies that the leadership at your institution is fully aware of the application and intends to support your performance at this prestigious conference.

Submissions must be postmarked by June 3, 2013.

We will notify everyone of the results by July 1.

A call for presentations will come under separate e-mail soon. If you have questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Best wishes,

Mark Spede

Our colleagues David Kehler and John Culvahouse will be our very talented and detail-oriented conference hosts. They have already done much work on our behalf, and I am very confident that they will do much in the coming months to insure an efficiently professional and memorably collegial conference.

We will also have limited participating student group accommodations available at the nearby Best Western Kennesaw Inn for a before-taxes rate of $54.95.

Information regarding dates for the opening of conference booking windows for these hotels will come later this Summer. Please respond quickly when prompted.

NOTE:

This email will also serve as the official "Call for Performance Applications" for the 2012 CBDNA Southern Division Conference. Please understand that current membership in CBDNA is required for application for performance consideration, and if the application is successful, your membership must be in force for the conference as well.

To apply for performance consideration, please assemble the following materials:

1) TWO copies of the application CD; ONE clearly marked with the school, ensemble, and conductor, and ONE entirely unmarked. (Be sure to finalize the CDs and test them for write errors, etc. on a stand-alone CD player for viability.) The Application CD should include 25-35 minutes of live, unedited concert recordings. Recordings may be selected from live concert performances from academic years 2009-10 and/or 2010-11. Do not edit the recordings in any fashion.
.
2) A Letter of Application which will include detailed information for each CD track (composition title, composer, performing ensemble/conductor, and date of performance), and proposed conference program selections, including possible premieres, guest artists/composers, et al.

Some notes for clarification...

a) Evaluations of the recordings will be conducted by a team of qualified professionals under the direction of Dr. Mark Spede (CBDNA Southern Division President-Elect).

b) The ensemble and conductor making application must be the ensemble and conductor represented in the recordings.

c) A "live concert recording" is one captured from a performance with an audience in attendance.

d) By submitting an application for consideration, you acknowledge that you intend to accept an invitation to perform at the 2012 conference should an invitation be extended to your school. This implies that the leadership at your institution is fully aware of the application and intends to support your performance at this prestigious conference.

It will be my honor to serve as your CBDNA Southern Division President for the next two years. I am confident that our 2012 conference is in the very best of hands with our friends at KSU, and in consultation with NBA Southern Division President, Dr. Rick Good, I look forward to presenting a conference for the Southern Divisions of CBDNA and NBA that is reflective of the needs and desires of our dual constituencies.
